For nearly twenty years, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation has been welcoming the entire Baltimore community to Oregon Ridge Park for a one-of-a-kind outdoor service: a chance to welcome the Jewish new year with the darkening sky as your synagogue.
Each year, thousands of people converge on the Cockeysville outdoor venue. Part music festival, part community block party, part family reunion, all worship service, literal and chosen families spread out picnic blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy one another’s company and the beautiful scenery.
When the services convene with a shofar blast, the gathering takes on a different feel. The decidedly twenty-first-century tradition in many ways hearkens back to its ancient roots: an outdoor assembly of the community, grouped by family or tribe (including chosen family), to hear and participate in the ritual and music of the new year.
Perhaps that resonance explains Rosh HaShanah Under the Stars’ longevity. It feels somehow right to be with family and friends and strangers amidst nature allowing our worship to be bigger than the walls of any building could hold.
Rosh Hashanah Under the Stars is free and open to the public, but you must register in advance.
