Here’s what nourishes and sustains our community.
People and organizations often claim to live by values. Sometimes they articulate those values, maybe even post them on a wall. Too often, though, “values” are merely words. At BHC, we work hard not only to articulate what matters to us, but to embody what matters to us. What’s more, we endeavor to do what we must when we realize we’ve fallen short.
The values that guide us:
Here’s what nourishes and sustains our community.
Welcoming:
We strive to be a place of belonging for people who want to be involved in Jewish life. Honoring the core Jewish value of B’tzelem Elohim (created in the Divine Image), we know all people are essential to our community’s wholeness, including those who may not have always felt welcome in Jewish spaces, for example: LGBTQ+, neurodiverse, people of color, people with disabilities, and Jewish-adjacent people (someone who is not Jewish but is closely proximate to Judaism and/or Jewish life).
Community:
We build community in the congregation and in the greater world locally, nationally and in Israel. We take care of each other in joy and sorrow. We work toward Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). Through a supportive atmosphere and myriad opportunities for participation we work to connect individuals and families with each other and to the whole of BHC.
Learning:
We believe in learning together to apply the lessons of Judaism in processing and understanding our world. We offer a rich array of educational opportunities for all ages that promote Jewish values, Jewish life, Jewish prayer and Jewish peoplehood.
Creativity:
We use our creativity, joy and passion to innovate and evolve in our practice of Judaism and our relationship with God. We honor long standing traditions and also embrace new modes of worship, learning, and life cycle celebration.
